The Chane In Steps
Once the ballerinas costumes in ballet changed, there movement was no longer restricted. They were able to turn jump and leap, and doing all of this on Pointe. The combination of the invention of the Pointe shoe and women's costume change, created a whole new spectrum of steps. Simple turns like a Pirouette and the Foutte' were suddenly complex and advanced steps. These new steps created a new dance. Dancers were able to portray fictional characters during ballets, being able to dance and turn in ways that seemed like flying. This allowed the dancers to perform ballets with stories, for example, Swan Lake, or the Nutcracker. In the 18th century the numbers of ballerinas increased and so did the amount of turns and jumps in the performances. This new type of dance attracted a bigger audience and made it into a very entertaining event.
